Understand a Belastingdienst letter (Dutch Tax Administration) – plain English
The Belastingdienst is the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. It sends income tax assessments (aanslag inkomstenbelasting), payment reminders (aanmaning) and, through Dienst Toeslagen, letters about allowances (toeslagen) for rent, health insurance or childcare. Letters are in Dutch.
Words to look for
- Aanslag: tax assessment – tells you whether you pay or get money back. Voorlopige aanslag: provisional assessment.
- Te betalen / Terug te ontvangen: amount to pay / refund.
- Betalingskenmerk: payment reference – always use it when you pay.
- Uiterste betaaldatum: payment deadline. Aanmaning: formal reminder with extra costs.
- Bezwaar: objection – usually within 6 weeks of the assessment date, as printed in the letter.
- Toeslag / Beschikking: allowance and the decision about it.
What to do
- Check the amount and deadline in the letter and pay with the betalingskenmerk.
- If you cannot pay at once, ask for a payment plan (betalingsregeling) before the deadline; BelastingTelefoon: 0800-0543.
- Send requested documents with the reference, or upload them in Mijn Belastingdienst (DigiD).
